ARCHAEOLOGY IN BARCELONA: Introduction

Archaeological activity has increased and developed enormously in Barcelona over the last 25 years. The urban transformations that have taken place since the 1992 Olympic Games, involving large-scale earth movement, have opened up many excavation sites, enabling archaeological knowledge of the city to increase considerably.

In Barcelona today, archaeology is being increasingly integrated into the urban intervention process, and is becoming more and more another planning and prevention activity rather than an action aimed solely at saving heritage. Our growing knowledge and understanding about what lies under the city means that it is often possible to stay one step ahead of works, minimising the surprises that planners and builders find themselves confronted by and preventing unnecessary destruction.

There does exist an ongoing debate, however, one common to all historic cities, about conserving and integrating heritage or archaeological remains into the fabric of the modern city. One of the great cultural challenges that face our society today is how to ensure the development of the modern city without destroying all trace of ancient settlements.
